CARIANN: You're the creator of Never Normal Records. What inspired you to create this label, and how did it come about?

SUZI: I created Never Normal while living in the Bronx, NY. It is a platform for innovation from original artists worldwide. It is a collection of audiovisual recordings and archives from composers of color — electronic-based music from communities all around the world. I wanted not only to create an archive of recorded releases, but also visuals and inspirations that aren't restricted by the norms of the "music industry", a space for people to represent the truth of their story, sound, and vision. I started with my own “CHILLS +THRILLS” release and now we have had over 10 releases.

CB: Talk to me about Never Normal Soundsystem as well as ZONEZ.

SA: Never Normal Soundsystem is Never Normal's artist community — we share sounds, skills, energy, and whatever it takes to persevere as an artist in these times. Innovators, pioneers, the sounds of places, the sounds of cities, the sounds of corners, you know? That's really what Never Normal is — bringing more attention and light to the innovators of our surroundings. Some of the artists we have in our Never Normal Soundsystem Collective are NO EYES, DJ Earl, RaFia, Ziggee Gold, J Words, myself, Heavee, Amani Fela, Ted Kamal, Queens D.Light in Oakland, and Nappy Nappa from D.C. I mean, people are from every city.

ZONEZ is my series of compositions that reflects that mindstate. ZONEZ is my audio-visual mood board. There's music and visuals paired together, guerilla filmmaking style, and just bringing the sounds to life, there's a lot of messages, a lot of mantras on ZONEZ and in my music that I try to share with people and give some motivation.

CB: You've traveled all over the world — both residential and playing music. What's the biggest takeaway from your experience traveling and meeting different types of people?

SA: Traveling has taught me the universalities of humanity and how we can better survive together. City to city, the needs stay the same; safety, joy, food, connecting, creativity. It has taught me to need so much less and focus on what really counts, bringing people together through experiences.

CB: What's coming up next for you? What project do you want to tackle next?

SA: Up next is ZONEZ World Tour. I am kicking off my internationally-focused tour in Uganda at Nyege Nyege Festival and bringing the sounds as many places as I can worldwide. There are also some upcoming releases from emerging Never Normal Soundsystem artists and some other special projects I’ll be launching soon that won't be just music. My goal is to bring daily inspiration to as many areas of life as I can.

CB: You really exemplify the term 'self-made' which I really admire. You started recording yourself on cassette before that was even a cool thing to do. What advice do you have for young people looking for their voice or looking to express themselves?

SA: Thank you. I would say to young people, never be afraid to experiment and FIND IT. Don’t let your social surroundings hold you back — life is very short and you only have the day in front of you to really inspire.

CB: I'd really like to ask your advice as you being a woman of color. I started Midnight Woman because I felt that much of the world was telling me that my story didn't matter. Those feelings I had don't even scratch the surface of those of other women, particularly women of color. What advice do you have for me, a heterosexual, white, middle-class person, on elevating the stories of others in a way that is respectful? It is so important to me that this brand and company be an inclusive place, and I would love any advice you have. What do you want to see media outlets doing for people of color?

SA: Thanks for this. I would like other media outlets headed by non-black and POC people to just give us the space and true promotions to let our stories be heard without taking any credit, just letting our stories push through and shine and utilizing your resources and influence to truly connect and cultivate change in our world!
